long time

no talk.

I am unbelievably sad that Steve Irwin died. I feel a little sick about it. I don't know why, other than this vague idea that it's like the death of my prolonged adolesence (long story; it involves being in college and crocodile hunter t-shirts). RIP Steve.

I'm up revising a letter that will never actually be signed at 6 am tomorrow, but we're all supposed to pretend it will and not sleeping is part of the pretending. If only we got to dress up, too! And have cookies.

I yelled at someone on the phone today, and damn did it feel good. It had the fortunate side effect of impressing a partner who stopped by to talk to me (assuming yelling is still impressive. it might not be PC to yell anymore).

And now the dog downstairs is barking, and even though I'm not trying to fall asleep, I want to slap it. I'm also vaguely concerned that since I never hear him bark, this must mean there is an intruder in the building, but I'm too lazy to check. Plus I'm not wearing a bra, and I can't risk going braless into the hall.

Do you think when Thomas Alva Edison invented the light bulb he could have imagined it would have caused and allowed me, 100 some odd years later, to be sitting up at this hour trying to decide whether I should use "greater" or "exceeds" to decide what happens if the currency exchange to Euros leads to an overpayment? Hmm, Mr. Edison? Now there's a decision that's not electric.

I went to New York for the first time since I moved back to Chicago a year and a half ago. It was fine. It was odd. I was there for a little over a day. I miss some things about it, I don't miss others. But I do miss how it feels like you are in the center of the universe and like you are nothing, all at once.

Drumline: Underrated

As I mentioned below, I didn't have to work on MLK day (we officially had the day off; I was probably expected to come in anyway and show my hardworking, firm loving spirit, but fuck em), so I got to watch some HBO HD. HBO HD honored MLK by playing "driving miss daisy" and "drumline". Wow. Way to go HBO! They didn't explicitly say that they were playing movies with black people in them because it was MLK day, but that was no coincidence.

Anyway, I couldn't stop watching Drumline. I especially enjoyed the token white peole in the drumline. During the drumming battle scene at the very end of them movie, the other side had this red haired white guy. BRIGHT RED HAIR. It was sweet. "Central casting? Yes, we need a REALLY, REALLY WHITE GUY, preferably with red hair so he stands out."

And I just couldn't stop watching it.

cold

no work today, but C. had to go in. sent Mom off in the car service to the airport this morning, went to the gym, putzed around, went to barnes and noble (which, unfortunately, is next to the loews, so everyone and their mother comes and waits in the book store for their movie to start. today, this contingent included the "school is cancelled let's take 800 12 year olds to the movies!" group. what is it with me and large groups of pre-teens?), went to CVS and went home. exciting, i know.

it's FREEZING here. we've had a really mild winter, so while this 20 degrees should feel like, oh, 20 degrees to Michigan-raised me, but instead feels like negative 15.

ooooh trent lott is on CNN trying to justify spending millions on the inauguration. fun.

entry

I haven't written in awhile, I apologize. Since I've now received a voicemail requesting a post (thanks G) I guess I should oblige.

First, the good news: I've bought a 37-inch plasma television. You really haven't lived until you've seen that awful movie "The Cat in the Hat" in its high definition, wide-screen glory (some alcohol helps). Holy shit guys you have to come visit just to see the TV. I love this thing so much I'm actually worried about how it will fare in a move to chicago. A move that isn't even scheduled yet.

Now the bad news: i fucking hate my job. I work too much. i can't breathe. If there is a hate disease, I've developed it. And I'm so demoralized I can't even motivate myself to work on my own resume (much less I's resume, which i was supposed to be working on.) i am in a rut. a rut of hate! :) agh.

observations

1. what little impact there is in wearing one of those yellow "live strong" bracelets is generally nullified by standing in front of your office building smoking. especially when you hold the cigarette in the hand attached to the wrist with the bracelet around it.

2. when my girlfriend gets depressed she shops for kittens. no shit. i believe we're about to be blessed with our third.
