from my second to last trip to chicago

votekerry.jpg

That's T2, holding hands with my girlfriend and expressing his love of both lesbians AND John Kerry at the same time.

I have obscured their faces to save T2 his membership in the GOP. He can thank me later.

nervous

I'm uncharacteristically nervous about this interview on Monday. I haven't interviewed in three years, and I really want to get the hell out of here, so that's most of it. The other problem is that I spent too much time looking at the profiles of associates on their websites and they're all magna cum laude and graduated with honors from yale. But...well, I guess they wouldn't have given me an interview if they weren't going to hire my non-honors self. (Note that I failed to get honors in college not because I'm dumb, but because I was "finding myself" [ok, and I was lazy and played too much mario kart]. Note that I failed to get honors in law school because a certain professor almost failed me in his crappy class. grrrr.) and this is just my first interview. i will get more. oh yes, i will. yes.

i think.

sigh.

anyway, it will be good to see the folks in chicago and hear g.c.'s version of the story where he got banned from a bar for only wearing one shoe. plus i get to call in sick to my real job, which is always a good time.

the Illinois bar application is the most ridiculous thing ever

Two undergraduate professors?? ARE YOU KIDDING ME. I'm almost 27 years old. I can remember what I ate for lunch yesterday. You want me to refer you to two undergraduate professors that can talk about me?

Oh. my. god.

Maybe I will stay in New York.

ohhh shit that's a lot of snow

Expect a post on the Great Blizzard of 2005 sometime in the next 24 hours.

Why, oh why, could this not have happened on a Tuesday? I easily could have turned this into at least two days off of work.

for my birthday: Onkyo's NR1000 future proof home theater receiver. Wow, I could spend DAYS ignoring C. and my friends just hooking up components to this thing.

Drumline: Underrated

As I mentioned below, I didn't have to work on MLK day (we officially had the day off; I was probably expected to come in anyway and show my hardworking, firm loving spirit, but fuck em), so I got to watch some HBO HD. HBO HD honored MLK by playing "driving miss daisy" and "drumline". Wow. Way to go HBO! They didn't explicitly say that they were playing movies with black people in them because it was MLK day, but that was no coincidence.

Anyway, I couldn't stop watching Drumline. I especially enjoyed the token white peole in the drumline. During the drumming battle scene at the very end of them movie, the other side had this red haired white guy. BRIGHT RED HAIR. It was sweet. "Central casting? Yes, we need a REALLY, REALLY WHITE GUY, preferably with red hair so he stands out."

And I just couldn't stop watching it.

and a liquor store in Compton

"I studied those albums like someone who was studying for the bar," he said.

I too hope to be shot seven times then. Anything to inspire me to quit this job.

cold

no work today, but C. had to go in. sent Mom off in the car service to the airport this morning, went to the gym, putzed around, went to barnes and noble (which, unfortunately, is next to the loews, so everyone and their mother comes and waits in the book store for their movie to start. today, this contingent included the "school is cancelled let's take 800 12 year olds to the movies!" group. what is it with me and large groups of pre-teens?), went to CVS and went home. exciting, i know.

it's FREEZING here. we've had a really mild winter, so while this 20 degrees should feel like, oh, 20 degrees to Michigan-raised me, but instead feels like negative 15.

ooooh trent lott is on CNN trying to justify spending millions on the inauguration. fun.

children: overrated

C., Mom and I went to see Pacific Overtures, staring bd wong from oz/svu. When we got there a line had already formed to get inside the theater: a line comprised almost entirely of 13 year old girls (we later learned there were 52 of them). motherfucker. Much to the delight of the 75 year old mink coat clad women behind us, I look at C. and my Mom and said "I know we're going to get stuck with them sitting behind us."

and sure enough.

I've always been a strong proponent of the idea that children should be sent away to an island when they turn 10 and not allowed to return until they're 23. Indeed, I came up with it myself when I was 12 and had to attend middle school with 300 pubescent fuck heads. Imagine what a world that would be--all assholes would be adults, and that means if you have to put one of them in their place and deliver a well deserved beat down, you'll just get charged with simple assault instead of child abuse.

the only thing keeping me from grabbing one of them and slapping the hell out of her was the character and fitness portion of the illinois bar. well, that and the vodka cranberry that i'd sucked down before the show to prevent just such an incident.

big blue goat

according to technorati only one site links to me (except for GC's site, and that doesn't count because I know him. And because he hasn't posted in ages.) Now why they've linked to me, I don't know, but I won't look a gift horse in the mouth. If it is in fact a gift horse. I've never really thought about anyone reading this blog except for my friends, some of their friends, the people who work with dirty rev, and people who search for "melatonin and nyquil". I guess I don't care either way.

speaking of people whose google searches send them to my site, check this out. These are from my december statistics. December means finals time for 1Ls! Ah, reliance damages.

Not to toot my own horn, but if you google "reliance damages" I'm the second entry.

drrrrrrty

I'm on a conference call with a bunch of French people. It's boring as hell. Thankfully, I don't have to talk, I just get to sit here with my cellphone on mute with the earpiece in. I'm at home because my Mom flew in last night for the long MLK day weekend and I promised her I'd take today off. Unfortunately, this morning I've had to dial-in to two separate conference calls (this being no. 2). I've been stuck in the other room for an hour and a half now on this second call. I'm not really paying attention. I think she's watching Little House on the Prairie in the other room.

Last night at around 7:30 I was walking up the steps out of the subway on my way home from work and I couldn't figure out whether the foul musty smell that hit me in the face as I neared the top was emanating from the over-dressed businessman in front of me (he was wearing a suit and an overcoat and it was humid and 60. yes, in January) or just from the street. I'm not sure what this means, other than that, if I even have to wonder, New York is a consistently dirty place.

dirty rev and mordechai: a love story

I know this blog has recently gotten a little bit out of control with the mordec(h)ai posts (ed.: C. prefers the non-h spelling of the name), but (a) all-mordecai (ed.: fine jesus stop reading over my shoulder) is better than no posts at all and (b) mordy makes the dirty rev so freaking happy.

hey compleat people, I hear you think the rev is a little bit obsessed with the cat. well, you're absolutely right, and this is for you:

Mordechai disagrees. He thinks that the wheel is fine the way it is and I would be happier not reinventing it for some partner that is too stupid to, oh, I don't know, call a partner in securitization and ask if he knows the answer off the top of his head so I don't have to spend 8 months researching obscure CFR parts on securities.

Mordechai expresses his displeasure by laying on, and then consuming, 31 CFR Part 306: General Regulations Governing U.S. Securities.

looking

Resume just went out to at least one recruiter in Chicago. Thanks to TR for a really good rewrite of it and DB for the recruiter reference.

This is quite freeing. I am now totally not worried about the memo I'm supposed to be writing. I know, I know, don't get fired BEFORE I get a new job. But still...

reliancedamages reborn!

sorry, i had to make it sound exciting.

I upgraded to MT v. 3.14 to take advantage of the new comment features (that combined with mt-blacklist should make my comments ALMOST spam free, knock on wood). I haven't been updating lately because, frankly, it's depressing to log on and have 10,000 spam comments. It slows down my pageloading times and is just a bother and as those who know me know, i have no fucking patience.

The upgrade only took 3.5 hours and involved only 5 fatal perl errors! woohoo.

enjoy.
